2025 Product Wrap-Up: A Year of Building Better Workflows (and Collaborating Better)
As we wrap up the year, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on what’s been an incredibly strong year for the OpenFn platform and to share a big milestone we’re excited to finally put in your hands.
From foundational improvements to powerful new ways to build, run, and collaborate on workflows, 2025 was all about making Lightning faster, more reliable, and more delightful to use.
Here’s a look back at the highlights ![]()
Q1: Strong Foundations for Building & Managing Workflows
We kicked off the year by focusing on workflow creation, governance, and scale:
- Data Collections to better manage shared data across workflows
- Audit trails & snapshots for improved traceability and debugging
- Project-level run concurrency for better performance control
- Create workflows from templates
- GitHub Sync improvements to support code-first teams
These updates laid the groundwork for more complex, production-ready integrations.
Q2: Better Builder & Support Experiences
In Q2, we focused on improving how teams build workflows and get support:
- Grant Support Access to safely troubleshoot issues with the OpenFn team
- Template publishing to share reusable workflows
- GDPR compliance tools
- Better manual runs for faster testing and iteration
Q3: Smarter, Faster Workflow Creation
Q3 was all about helping you build better workflows, faster:
- Edit workflows with the AI Assistant
- Manual & auto layout modes on the canvas
- Undo / Redo (yes, finally!)
- Transfer projects between billing accounts
- Keychain credentials for complex authentication scenarios
These improvements made workflow authoring more flexible and forgiving.
Q4: Collaboration Takes Center Stage
And now to the biggest theme of Q4: collaboration.
We introduced powerful new capabilities to help teams work together seamlessly:
- Visualizing runs directly on the canvas
- Sandboxes for safe experimentation
- The Collaborative Editor (more on this below
)
AI & Tooling Improvements
We also made meaningful investments in our tooling and AI stack:
- Faster AI interactions with an additional database (currently in staging)
- Integrated adaptor documentation
- CLI v2.0 improvements, with documentation coming soon
Big Announcement: The Collaborative Editor Is Here
We’re excited to officially announce that the Collaborative Editor is now available and it’s quickly becoming the default way to build workflows in Lightning.
What makes it awesome?
Template picker built directly into the editor
AI Assistant embedded where you write and edit jobs
Real-time collaboration, including:
- Collaborative cursors and pointers on the canvas
- Shared run history and selection
A redesigned IDE experience:
- New header and navigation
- Improved run, log, input, and output panels
- Cleaner manual run experience
A long list of bug fixes and performance improvements that make editing smoother and more reliable
We’re actively working toward making the Collaborative Editor the default editor experience for all users.
